Journal entry, 12.10.1996
Jochen and Charlotte, musicians from Europe, built a complete sound studio in the sacred forest. Kpassenon was afraid that the loud drumming could wake up the ghosts of the ancestors, who make their homes here.
So he asked them for their permission and, during the ceremony, sprinkled all the equipment with sacrificial blood. Jochen wasn’t too thrilled when he saw it. I’m more used to it, he wasn’t. Nor was Charlotte. She turned green...went well with her red slacks.
40 Musicians from all over Benin have converged, to record music and sounds for a few weeks with Charlotte and Jochen. The fact that Jochen couldn’t speak a word of French didn’t make things any easier. But the recording went amazingly well, considering.
Journal entry, 16.10.1996
Every morning, we had to fetch 40 chairs from the market and set them up in the forest. They can only be rented by the day. No one was interested in our suggestion of paying a lump sum to rent them for a few weeks, so we could just leave them in the forest. So we had to cart 40 chairs into the forest every morning and cart them back every night.
Impressed with the singing of the village women, Charlotte felt impelled to do some experimental music with them. Unpacked her viola and tried to play along. The women were horrified, and later asked me if she could actually play. Poor thing.
